Maddie shook her head to clear it. "The only thing sheriff, I don't think I killed him. Things are little hazy. We were str ugglong. Someow I got the derringer from my bag. He grabbed my wrist. But to do that, he would have had to drop the knife. If I had stabbed him wouldn't I have blood on my hands or clothes, other than my arm." Now if her had been stabbed with a hat pin, maybe.' She was starting to feel even more woozy. Jenny came up to Ralph. "I thought that it might not be a good idea for her to go to the hotel. We cleaned up one of the rooms upstairs a little. Thought she could stay there today, and the other girls and I could keep an eye on her. just in case, she needs something" Troy Slater@ralph

Ralph didn't really care about all the fuss over paying him for a bottle of whiskey, it meant nothing to him especially when compared to the safety of his newest employee, Maddie. She was excellent at cards and a good addition to his business. Ralph was all about business and of course making a profit. No profits and you don't stay in business very long was the truth of it. She'd live though and her exhusband would bother her no longer. Though he wouldn't say it out loud, if Maddie hadn't killed the man when he attacked her, Ralph would have saw to it himself. He had no qualms about killing people who he judged were a danger to him and his saloon folk, his livelihood.
"Nevermind the damn whiskey. I said it's on the house. And yeah, you can lie down upstairs, there are a few empty rooms with beds up there," Ralph answered Maddie.
"If you can't walk that far, there is an empty cot in the back room of the kitchen, nothin' fancy just a cot and a pillow," he added.
The lawman seemed satisfied with Maddie's story, without any other witnesses it was pretty much her word. The deceased wouldn't be arguing his side of it , that was certain.

Mattie quickly made a brief notation in the ledger she kept in her doctor's kit -- swiftly documenting the date, location, and details of Madelaine's surgery, including the observers present and supplies used, and then finished cleaning and putting away her tools and supplies. If the sheriff wanted the bloodied clothing or detritus as evidence, he would collect them himself or send someone to do so.
In reply to Madelaine's question, Mattie quietly said, "I'll leave this with Mr. Mundy regarding the costs of the surgery, and you can confer with him regarding the whiskey when you are up to it," and she gestured with a small slip of paper listing a modest sum for the gauze and carbolic acid costs, and added kindly, "It's likely the town doctor will be more convenient for you, if you find yourself in discomfort. You should be feeling perfectly well in a month or so as it was a clean wound. But I'll try to check with you the next time I will be in town."
Nodding to the saloon owner, she said, "Thank you, Mr. Mundy. I hope we'll meet under more pleasant circumstances next time."
Mattie gathered up her belongings, smoothed her hair, and prepared to take her leave. Perhaps she could catch up with the sheriff and discuss the questions she had for him, unless he had pressing business.
