"A single Indian? Well, sounds like in the end it turned out alright for you then? As of the past few years running into a whole bunch of Indians can often be very fatal for us white folks," Nathan pointed out, the Indians had been fighting being sent to reservations and people were being killed, on both sides. Many Montanans wanted the government to bring in more troops and do something once and for all. One thing he knew for certain, the Indians were too few to ever stop the tide of whites into the west. It wasn't going to end well for them.
The discussion moved to soup and Nathan agreed with her observations.
"Indeed, I fully agree. Soup is always best in the cold weather I find. And yes, as you will find out soon enough, our Montana winters are often hard ones. Lot of snowfall, lot of wind, and very cold temperatures. Blizzards can and do kill folks every year, it's a fact," he replied.
"Although I have heard New Orleans is cursed with heat and humidity making it even worse," he paused for her confirmation or not.

“Yes, thankfully there was just one His name was Tokala.” Claire remembered the encounter vividly as it hadn’t been that long ago and he’d been one of the last people she’d encountered in Texas. “He came into town looking for a lost child from their tribe and some men were chasing him. I was in the storage room and when I came out, discovered him hiding under my desk.”
Her eyes widened as Nathan related just how bad the weather could be in Montana. “In the case of blizzards, I assume then we might be shut in for a long spell.” That would mean stocking up on supplies—food, water, blankets, and warm clothes in particular.
Nodding in affirmation to his comments on New Orleans’ weather, Claire replied, “You’ve heard right. It’s very muggy and hurricane season is always the greatest threat. Thankfully, those don’t occur often.”

"Hiding under a desk?" Nathan was rather amused at the mental picture that conjured up, "Don't think you'd find any Sioux or Cheyenne warriors doing any such thing. But I am very happy for you it all turned out alright."
They changed subjects then to the local weather, him warning her that Montana winters could be - well almost always were - quite harsh. Long stretches of freezing temperatures, howling snowstorms that buried the roads and streets. On occasion blizzards had actually wiped out cattle on the range.
"Oh yes, the town practically shuts down on occasion when a storm dumps too much snow. But it's even worse for the poor farmers or ranchers living out in the open. I once saw a log cabin buried up it's roof in a mountain of a snow drift. Luckily it was on the back side of the house, the occupant, could still get in and out the front door," he recalled.
Claire countered with her memory of New Orleans weather, mentioning hurricanes. Now he knew what those were but had never experienced anything like that.
"Hurricanes, I've heard they can last a long time....so what's the worst part? The high winds or all the rain they dump?" he was curious.

“I’m sure most wouldn’t be hiding under a desk if men weren’t chasing them and firing shots. If I recall correctly, he had a knife, but that was his only weapon and clearly outnumbered.” She realized she must not have made this clear and elaborating on it hopefully did. “No happier than I am.” She smiled at his comment. “I helped him escape out a window from my upstairs apartment.”
As Nathan explained how critical the weather conditions made things, especially for farmers and ranchers, Claire couldn’t help feeling sympathetic. “How horrible that must be for them. I’m guessing it makes it difficult for you, too, if there are medical emergencies and consequences you can’t do anything about.”
When he asked about the hurricanes, she thought for a moment which might be worse. “I suppose the flooding is probably the most dangerous. Like the snow, it can rise so high that it drowns a large number of people if they have nowhere else to go. Fortunately, a good number have family far enough away they can visit until it’s safe to return. Even then though, there might not be anything left of their possessions. You’d be surprised how many decide to just risk it.”
Pausing, she took a spoonful of stew that had cooled enough to savor.

Hurricanes indeed did sound most unpleasant, Mother Nature was the preeminent force on this Earth to deal with despite what mankind planned or schemed, Aurelian long believed and this only reinforced that belief too. Perhaps the whole topic was a bit......well dark and gloomy for a pleasant lunch though. They were here afterall to enjoy themselves and the food, specifically the stew. He dug in for a moment then taking a few bites of the dish, savory and warm as usual, a true comfort food in his opinion.
"Well, enough about the weather then, grim topic anyhow," he smiled after a few seconds, "Hope you find the stew to your satisfaction? I do but then I am used to it."
"So....tell me about any exciting plans you might be cooking up - pardon the pun - for the new version of the paper? Most people like to stamp their own imprint on something they inherit or pick up."
He believed the town did need a good paper as part of eventually growing into a prosperous city down the line.

“Grim indeed,” Claire affirmed regarding the current topic of bad weather. Thankfully, outside it was sunny and warm, just perfect for early May.
She smiled as the topic moved on when he inquired as to how she liked the meal. “And I couldn’t agree more, the stew is delicious. I see why it’s your favorite and brings you here often.”
Pausing to deliberate his question, Claire lifted her shoulders in a slight shrug. “Honestly, I haven’t given it as much thought as I should. Since you’ve lived here for a while, perhaps you could give me some ideas from the male point of view. You know…what sort of thing you’d like to read over a good cup of coffee.”
She’d liked to have been able to add ‘every morning’, but it would be a weekly paper as was most common in small towns. “I do want to make it interesting and the advertisements affordable,” recalling what he’d shared about the greed of the previous owner. Of course she had to make a profit, too.
