He also can be a very dangerous man to cross, he can almost paranoid about any imagined threats to his saloon. Given his background, he can be a very violent sort. He likes very few people really but those in his inner circle he can be quite protective of.
HISTORY:
Ralph grew up dirt poor in New York and ran away from a bad home at a young age.
He joined a street gangthe kind that violently terrorized many a NY neighborhood.
In the Civil War he fought in the Union army and actually did not think it was so bad. He had a uniform, weapon and ammunition provided
for, regular enough meals until he participated in Sherman's March to the Sea when that became more problematic. And as for the violence, the killing, it really didn't bother him. As a
nice bonus some fancy jewelry and Swiss watch he looted from a plantation home provided him with a down payment on a small tavern in Chicago as he did not return to NYC upon his military discharge.
He found his niche in running a saloon, he loved it and he was
good at it. He was always willing to do whatever it took, damn the legalities. He might have stayed in Chicago the rest of his life but for a violent incident in his place one night that ended up with a couple men dead, including a big shot alderman. Very quickly, he decided to get out of the city fast and headed out west, taking only what cash he could carry and accompanied by Caroline.
He has now settled into Golden Valley, cocky new owner of the Golden Palace saloon in middle of town.
