Maddie was born in New Orleans to a cotton merchant Charles Dubois and his wife Antionette. Growing up as an only child she was spoiled rotten. She was sent to the best school, learned to speak English, Cajun and Spanish. At the age of 16 she met a man who literally swept her off her feet. He told her that he loved her and promised to marry her. She took what jewelry she had and ran off with him.
Well, the marriage never happened, the man turned out to be a riverboat gambler. Maddie couldn't go home. the war had started. So, she stayed with him. She found she had a knack for playing cards. When her friend was killed in a fight over cards, and the dealer at the table wounded, Maddie took over the game and finished the evening. She then convinced the Captain to let her continue.
When the boat was confiscated for blockade running, Maddie got out of there, with the jewelry and the clothes on her back. She wound up in St Louis. She boarded a train to Denver. She worked there for a couple of years and decided to move on. She wound up in Golden Valley working for Ralph Mundy at his saloon.
